Comments:I was the driver of a 5ton that towed the Bn CO,s trailor at Yakima Washington in 1965. While on the tank trail, the trailor flipped over and I drug it for several miles unknown due to the dust. It filled up with dust and ruined everything of the CO,s. They had to chase me down with jeeps to get me to stop. I could see nothing following the tanks.

Comments:I really enjoyed the 2009 reunion. It was my first and I regret not having attended before. Everyone made me feel welcome and I am looking forward to hosting the 2011 reunion in Nasville. The contacts are being made for the hotel accomodations and events. As they are finalized , you will be given the details . It is my hope that we will be able to get as many Dreadnaughts and family members to attend as possible.I brought up the possibilty of overflow and the people I have been talking to are open to that . They are also open to early arrival . The cost proposals should be coming in shortly so we can make a decision on the site and schedule as well as the dates for the reunion.God Bless All of You and Your Families. Respectfully, Rick Welch

Comments:I want to thank all the Dreadnaughts and their families who donated so generously to Toby's memorial scholarship at the Dreadnaught Reunion in Wheaton, Illinois. I presented the donation of $710.00 to Dave Cox, director of Foundation and Alumni at Lake Land Community College, Mattoon,Illinois on Wednesday, June 24. As I told everyone at the reunion, Toby's scholarship is the only one through the foudation that is geared to veterans families. Toby would be proud, but humbled at the thought of being honored in this way. My family and I felt this was the best way to honor and remember him. To those of you who knew him you know why we felt this way. To those who didn't get the chance to know him, I wish you could have and you also would know why he was held in such high regard. Thanks again evryone. God Bless all of you. Billie

Comments:SSG Anselmo (Sam) Arismendez was one of my drill sergeants at Ft. Knox, KY, the winter of 1970-71. He was tough but fair, and only wanted to make us into competent, professional soldiers. In my military career, I never forgot the example he set. I happen to be in Santa Fe, and thought again of SSG Arismendez (he was from New Mexico). Out of curiosity, I went on line to see if he might still be in the area. I came upon your website and saw where he had passed away in 2003. Though I know he will never see this, I wanted to go on record with my thanks for his example to me and many other 'trainees'. Like I told you forty years ago - "Yes, Drill Sergeant, some of us do remember". Thank you, Drill Sergeant.

Comments:A 60-year-old Vietnam War veteran who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq has become the oldest Army soldier to die in that conflict, the military said Thursday. An Associated Press database of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan shows that Maj. Steven Hutchison, of Scottsdale, Ariz., is the oldest member of any service branch killed since the wars broke out. The Pentagon said Steven Hutchison was killed in Iraq on Sunday. Army spokesman Lt. Col. Nathan Banks said Thursday that Hutchison was the oldest Army soldier killed in Iraq. Hutchison was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kan.

Comments:

What the 2nd day of May means to me. It is always a sad day because on this day – May 2, 1970, the 2nd Battalion 34th Armor lost 5 men to combat actions. On that day the 34th Armor Battalion lost Sgt. David William Barnett, Sp4 Rodney Lynn Griffin, Ssg. Bunyan Durant Price, Maj, Dale Wayne Richardson, and Cpt. Robert Milton Young. It was the Battalion’s second highest causality date and I remember seeing all of these men that on that day.

May 2, 1970 was day the 2/34th Armor Battalion lost Sgt. David William Barnett - Tank Commander of B-23. He was killed while atop his tank shortly before noon. His tank was leading a 4-vehicle column consisting of his M48 tank, 1 M106 Mortar track, an AVLB bridge tank from the 65th Engineers, and followed 1 more M106 mortar track. The total number of men in the column numbered just 17 men, The mission to get the AVLB, the tank, and the mortar tracks linked up with mixed elements of 2/34th Armor and 2/47th Mech. Infantry already in Cambodia. "Barney's" crew consisted of Greg Green, Tony Paolisso, and James Payne, with 2/34th HQ Mortars Plt. Sgt. William E. Bercaw riding on top with "Barney" as the column commander. The tank was also carrying a VN interpreter/scout behind the bustle rack, who stood next to Paolisso - who was watching his TC’s back.

After leaving Prek Lok RVN and prior to joining the larger US forces in Cambodia the little column four vehicles was ambushed by a vastly superior enemy force. Sgt. Barnett was hit and immediately fell into the interior of the M48. Plt. Sgt. Bercaw was also wounded at that time but stayed on top the tank and assisted Paolisso into the tank. He then directed the tank's driver - James Payne - to follow the trail forward towards the US forces far away in Cambodia. We began running a "gauntlet" of RPGs, heavy machine guns, and automatic weapons fire. The VN interpreter/scout had dismounted the tank at the onset of the ambush, as there was no room for him in the tank. He ran back to the following 2/34th mortar track. The tanks crew began sending out round after round of canister as soon as Paolisso joined Green at the cannon in the interior of the tank.

The next vehicle in line picked up the dismounted VN scout, pausing only long enough to get the scout up the rear ladder steps into the 3 door hatch of the mortar track. That mortar track crew consisted of Raymond Zelazny (driver), Thomas Brighton (gunner), myself (platoon medic), and Edward Athey (TC). Only two 65th Engineers - a driver and gunner, who we really did not know, manned the AVLB. The 2/34th mortar track bring up the rear was manned by Gary Griffin (driver), William Timmons, Anthony Tamburelli, Richard Van Wagner, and Donald Sheldon.

Each vehicle in the column put out round after round alongside both sides of the long and winding trail. The little column saved itself only by reaching the perimeter of larger US forces, as no supportive artillery fire, gun ships, or other organic was sent their way due to skirmishes occurring at the same time along the larger forces perimeter. We were lucky to get there before running out of canister rounds and rounds for our big machine guns and M16 rifles. When we reach the safety of the perimeter of the 2/34th Armor and 2/47th Mech's position, I went to the B-23 tank to see to about the condition of Sgt. Barnett and Plt. Sgt Bercaw. Bercaw was visibly peppered with multiple wounds, but still upright and on the rear deck of the tank. He sent me into the tank to check on Barnett’s status, who I found on the floor of the tank’s interior decking. It was very apparent that he had died immediately at the start of the ambush. A 2/47th joined me at the tank’s hatch asking if I need any help. I asked him to get a stretcher for Sgt. Barnett and to let up out to see to Plt. Sgt. Bercaw. Plt. Sgt. Bercaw had multiple wounds about the head , eyes, face, chest and abdomen, and even his legs. He was bandaged and I then checked the other members of the column for injuries. Except for hearing loss from the tank gunners and drivers, no one else was wound. All of the injured were evacuated shortly thereafter, including the body of Sgt. David W. Smith of B Company, 2/47th would was killed in an unrelated event earlier that morning. For Plt. Sgt William E. Bercaw’s actions of leadership and fighting during the running battle along the gauntlet’s jungle corridor he would later receive the DSC, one of DSC two awards made to members of the 34th Armor Battalion during the Vietnam War.

Later in the day of May 2, 1970 it would continue to be a bad day for other men of the Battalion and for men of the 229th Aviation Battalion. Men from the 2/34th Armor and the air crew of a 1st Cavalry UH1H helicopter, from B Company, 229th Aviation were flying into the 2/34th Armor and 2/47th Mech’s perimeter in Cambodia where the ambushed column lead by Plt. Sgt. Bercaw had went to. After stopping that perimeter, I remember seeing Rodney Griffin and the others moving about the helicopter. After leaving our location, the helicopter was hit by fire from the ground below and was forced to make an emergency landing. All accounts I have found state that the chopper made it just inside the Vietnam border. The flight crew of the 229th Aviation and the 2/34th Armor men made it to ground from all accounts but only one man from the helicopter made an effective escape. He was named Sp4 Tommy Karreci, and he returned to US control in a couple of days later after hiding and getting away from the crash site.

All of the 2.34th Armor Battalion men in the chopper were never be seen alive again. They were listed as MIA or POW for many years. According to the accounts I have researched, Cpt. Robert M. Young was reported dying in captivity as a POW. Ssg. Bunyan D. Price, Sp4 Rodney L. Griffin and Cpt. Dale W. Richardson of the 34th Armor were never heard of again, as well as WO1 Michael Varnado of the 229th.

Two men of the 229th Aviation Battalion were released in 1973. They were Sp4 Fredrick H. Crowson and CW2 Daniel F. Maslowski.

I hope you will honor all of the men lost that day, all the men lost to us on all the other days of the Vietnam War, and to celebrate the all memories (good and bad) we have of those men we fought alongside with. The soldiers from a prior war had a saying that I am only now becoming to learn and to understand. They said, "Lest We Forget" back then, now I think I understand what they meant.

I have scense retired from the USPS because of back surgery (360 degree spinal fusion, in 2000) OUCH!!!!!!!! My dr. said the operation I had actually comes with a suicide % of 10%, well needless to say I didn't do that, I mean after spending 1 year in Nam with you guys and going on to work for the US gov. for 20 years, the commies and the US gov.(USPS) couldn't kill me then I think I am pretty safe, knock on wood. I have a friend who was with an inf. unit (can't remember the unit, he'll probably kill me) and was shot 2 times (ak47) and him & I are pretty close. He comes over about 1 time a year with his wife and we sit around and remember old times.

Comments:Thanksgiving 1969, the Rock Crusher at Nui Ba Den. The engineers were dismantling the place and had taken the roof off the messhall. Our mess Sgt Lohnes served us a big turkey, shrimp cocktail and all. The weather was gray but no rain. The place lacked ambiance but boy that was a good meal 39 3/4 years ago. Long live the Dreadnaughts!

Comments:Hello to all Dreadnaughts! I need to update my mailing information. I moved to town in August . Taking care of the big place in the country proved to be too much for me, so I decided to move into an apartment. Since Toby's passing I had help from the kids and friends, but still just trying to keep up proved too much. The mowing alone took me four to five hours. Those of you who attended the "mini reunion" at our home in the country will remember the size of the place. Toby's daughter, her husband James and "little Toby" are living there, so it's not like I gave it up altogether. I still visit and I'll hunt the woods for the elusive Morel mushrooms in the Spring! By the way Grandpa Toby's namesake little Toby who's almost two now, is a lot like him. Look out world!( SMILE) I hope to see all of you in Wheaton in 2009. It's only about a 3 1/2 hour trip for me from downstate Illinois. I'm still looking for Bill Butters, so if anyone has any information please contact me. My new address

A special toast to those of us who were some of the first replacements and were privileged to serve with the original Dreadnaughts. We also had the honor to wear both the "Ivy Division" patch as well as the "Tropic Lightning/Electric Strawberry" patch. At this time of the year, please pause for a moment to remember those Dreadnaughts who paid the Supreme Sacrifice. We miss this all.

Comments:Ive been e-mailing Tom Grooman , and we discussed the possibility of locating an M48A3 and possibly restoring it if there is enough interest within the association. I ,for one , have great regard for the old battle buggies. There was not one in front of the 25th I.D. Museum when I went ther last September . That bothered me. We wouldn't necessarily be restoring one for that purpose , but as Tom mentioned ,for display at future reunions. Is anyone interested in pursuing a project of this type ? If so , let me know. I have no idea what the cost might be but that can be determined if it is deemed that we want to pursue this. I e-mailed the Patton Museum at Fort Knox to see if they could locate one if need be.When I hear from them I'll send out the info. Regards, Rick Welch

I enjoyed his company and his dedication to the 34th Armor Regiment. He, Denny and Pat were responsible for finding many of you Dreadnaughts in the last 40 years. He had many funny stories that he passed on, but had the solemn duty to pick up the bodies of Ssgt Hill, Joseph Vierra and Jerry Byers. The day after the C co CP was hit. Comments:I want to follow up on Gary Lapp's story about Soui Tre. I joined the Bn. on 3Mar67 and was assigned to the Scout Platoon. The platoon was at Katum when I went to the field. Larry Lewis was my first track commander and when he was moved to another track, Bill Hodgson was my commander. When our platoon pulled into the perimeter at FSB Gold, we stayed in the southwest corner. A mess sgt. from the 2/77 Arty came over to our track and said the they were glad we came to their rescue because they were fighting with the kitchen knives in the mess tent and if we had not arrived they would have been overrun. About mid afternoon when it was really hot, out platoon was tasked with helping to police up the battlefield. The back ramp on the ACAV was lowered until it was level with the ground and Richard Squyers and I would pick up the bodies and pieces of bodies as the track moved slowly around the battlefield and throw them on the ramp; not a very pleasant job. The dozer tanks dug two pits and the

Comments:On this day March 21st, 1967 the 2nd Battalion 34th Armor earned it’s second Presidential Unit Citation for its efforts at the Battle of Suoi Tre. It remains one of the proudest days of my life watching those from the 77th Arty waving and cheering as we broke into the clearing of the firebase. This conflict lasted from March 19th to March 21st, 1967. and with the arrival of the Mech forces ended the 3 day battle 4 hours later . When it was nice and safe the brass hats and intelligence REMF’s arrived to confiscate the war souvenirs. Don’t believe all that you hear from the History Channel and Military Channel. The NVA 9th Division commander says that Operation Junction City had no effect on his division , only the un-enlightened media can believe that a commander can loose most of a regiment and say that. Gen Vessey’s spin ignores those who saved his butt for his climb to the Chief of Staff for the Army. We cannot forget the 31 Americans that were killed in this battle.

Comments:Gary: Well, Gary, today is that infamous date for me. Today is the date that Charlie 33 (C-33) was blown up from under me and as you know my Tank Commander Sgt. Hill and our Loader Vierra were erased from the face of the Earth. The Gunner Carson all I know is that he was burned SO bad that he was immediately evacuated to a burn hospital in Japan. Whether he lived or not, I never heard from him again. So I am one lucky son-of-a-gun! When the tank exploded and I was ejected (blown) out, got up, half-way came to my senses, I could see the NVA trying to hit me with their fire . The tank burning and the light from it was like a spot light shining on me. To this very day, I can still see the NVA tracers coming at me. Hundreds of them! It is just a miracle that NONE of the rounds hit me. I never found out what kind of machine guns they were using but all I know is that all I could see coming towards me was a wall of red projectiles Any way, Gary, you understand

Comments:To Pat, I just read the rest of the guest book messages and was saddend to hear of your brother Tony's death. I remember Tony at the first reunion standing by the food table cooking that delicious meat, and making that wonderful salsa. I had never eaten fresh salsa before. I couldn't get enough of it. While making another taco, I noticed we were out of salsa. Tony was making more but I didn't want to wait for it. I went ahead and put a TINY dab of the bottled hot sauce on it instead. Tony warned me to go with a light hand! I did, but I still had steam coming out of my ears and fire out of my nose! He just laughed, and said "I told you!" Wonderful guy Tony. Always had a smile. Again Pat, my condolences to you, your family and Tony's family. Billie

Comments:Hello to all. Sorry I couldn't make the last reunion. I'll plan on being at the one in Wheaton. It's only about three hours away from here. We awarded the first Toby Brant Scholarship this year. Thanks for all your support. BTW Dave Bigard, where did you find a hardback copy of Toby's book? They have been out of circulation for years. The new one(2004) is in paperback. It came out two weeks after Toby died in 2004. Also Toby was in Vietnam in 1969, not 1967. I would love to hear from Abe Cabracang. Still no word on Bill Butters. If anyone hears anything about Butters, please contact me. Love to all, Billie

Comments:My trip to the National Archives in College Park MD was disappointing. All of Major Jones S-3 reports were missing from Jan 1, 1967 to April 14th, 1967. The last records I could find was the quick draw contest on the battalion street on New Years Eve 1966 and the next was Charlie Company getting ready to load on to LST 626 to go to Task Force Oregon at Duc Pho. Missing in the 3 and ½ month gap were the Cp getting hit on March 1st. A list of wounded and killed in the attack, the battle of Soui Tre, and Task Force 34 where we lost C-32, and mines blew up C-34 and the VTR. Thanks to Rose, Junior and Brad Bean for putting up with me and my early hour habits for a week at Bridgeville Delaware and to Brad for negotiating the New Hampshire Ave traffic after rush hours.
