On Aug. 7, 1964, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, giving President Johnson broad powers in dealing with reported North Vietnamese attacks on United States forces.
Took basic training with B Company at Fort Irwin from March to May 1966. Was hoping to find platoon sargent Larry L. Spessard but see he has not been located yet. After basic was sent to Fort Lewis, WA and assigned to the 1/10 Cavalry. Went to Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division in Sept. 1966

Hi Dreadnaughts Thought I'd let everyone know sales of Toby's book are going quite well. An article in our local newspaper helped to generate sales.Several people have called to place orders and I enjoy talking to them.I try to fill orders as soon as possible, but find I fall behind due to personal dutiesI have to attend to. My stepmother passed away Feb 14th,so I had to take care of things . I lost my Dad Dec20,2003,Toby,Oct16,2004 and then my stepmom,so I've had a tough 14 months. My Mom in Ky is in the hospital now,so I have to go down there. Whew! I'm a tough tanker's wife,so I'll hang in there!Keep in touch and know you're all in my thoughts and prayers. Still no word on Bill Butters. Love to all,Billie
Would like to here from any of you tankers that served in 2nd Bn 34th.Armor. I went thru basic at Ft. Irwin, Calif in Feb-April l966 and shipped out on the USN Barrett in August l966 for a 21-day cruise. I was on C-33 with Sgt. Hill(TC) Carson as gunner and Joe Vierra the loader. I was the driver. C-33 got blown up (RPG-2) on 1 March l967 during Operation Junction City. Sgt Hill and Vierra were KIA. Carson was evacuated to Japan with burns all his body, I also was evacuated with burns to the hospital in Bien Hoa.
Sharpe Eyed Member Brad Bean informed me today that the Army has approved a Close Combat Badge for Soldiers in combat arms brigades or smaller in lieu of Combat Infantry Badge that most MOS’s would not be qualified to receive. “ THE ARMY WILL AWARD THE CCB TO ARMOR, CAVALRY, COMBAT ENGINEERS, AND FIELD ARTILLERY SOLDIERS IN MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTIES OR CORRESPONDING OFFICER BRANCH/SPECIALITES RECOGNIZED AS HAVING A HIGH PROBABILITY TO ROUTINELY ENGAGE IN DIRECT COMBAT…. “ This aint the Combat Armor Badge but it is as close as were are going to get. The Army finally recognizes our asshole can pucker just like the crunchies. For further details see: http://www4.army.mil/ocpa/read.php?story_id_key=6853
Hi Everyone-- Just got a call from Jr Underwood today. So glad to hear from him.Still trying to find Bill Butters. Think he may be in Huntsville Tx. Took an ad out in the Hunstville Item newspaper. In addition they are going to put the ad on their web site and a "trader type cicular" . Those two will be free of charge. With the increase in circulation, maybe I'll have some luck. If anyone hears from Bill or hears where he is please let me know. Thanks Billie
