Comments: | Hello to all Dreadnaughts! I need to update my mailing information. I moved to town in August . Taking care of the big place in the country proved to be too much for me, so I decided to move into an apartment. Since Toby's passing I had help from the kids and friends, but still just trying to keep up proved too much. The mowing alone took me four to five hours. Those of you who attended the "mini reunion" at our home in the country will remember the size of the place. Toby's daughter, her husband James and "little Toby" are living there, so it's not like I gave it up altogether. I still visit and I'll hunt the woods for the elusive Morel mushrooms in the Spring! By the way Grandpa Toby's namesake little Toby who's almost two now, is a lot like him. Look out world!( SMILE) I hope to see all of you in Wheaton in 2009. It's only about a 3 1/2 hour trip for me from downstate Illinois. I'm still looking for Bill Butters, so if anyone has any information please contact me. My new address |

Comments: | A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all Dreadnaughts everywhere. A special toast to those of us who were some of the first replacements and were privileged to serve with the original Dreadnaughts. We also had the honor to wear both the "Ivy Division" patch as well as the "Tropic Lightning/Electric Strawberry" patch. At this time of the year, please pause for a moment to remember those Dreadnaughts who paid the Supreme Sacrifice. We miss this all. |

May your stuffing be tasty
May your turkey plump,
May your potatoes and gravy
Have never a lump.

And your pies take the prize,
And may your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off your thighs!

Comments: | I just finished reading a great book on Vietnam, Viet Vets and the journey back to civilian life. "The Lost Boys", by Tim Potter. He is my cousin from CA. It is a historical novel and well researched. It is great and right on target. You will laugh, cry and remember the most significant time of your life. You'll probably find something that will remind you of yourself. I recommend it without reservation. |

Comments: | Ive been e-mailing Tom Grooman , and we discussed the possibility of locating an M48A3 and possibly restoring it if there is enough interest within the association. I ,for one , have great regard for the old battle buggies. There was not one in front of the 25th I.D. Museum when I went
thier last September . That bothered me. We wouldn't necessarily be restoring one for that purpose , but as Tom mentioned ,for display at future reunions. Is anyone interested in pursuing a project of this type ? If so , let me know. I have no idea what the cost might be but that can be determined if it is deemed that we want to pursue this. I e-mailed the Patton Museum at Fort Knox to see if they could locate one if need
be. When I hear from them I'll send out the info.
Regards,
Rick Welch |

Comments: | I want to follow up on Gary Lapp's story about Soui Tre. I joined the Bn. on 3Mar67 and was assigned to the Scout Platoon. The platoon was at Katum when I went to the field. Larry Lewis was my first track commander and when he was moved to another track, Bill Hodgson was my commander. When our platoon pulled into the perimeter at FSB Gold, we stayed in the southwest corner. A mess sgt. from the 2/77 Arty came over to our track and said the they were glad we came to their rescue because they were fighting with the kitchen knives in the mess tent and if we had not arrived they would have been overrun. About mid afternoon when it was really hot, out platoon was tasked with helping to police up the battlefield. The back ramp on the ACAV was lowered until it was level with the ground and Richard Squyers and I would pick up the bodies and pieces of bodies as the track moved slowly around the battlefield and throw them on the ramp; not a very pleasant job. The dozer tanks dug two pits and the |

Comments: | On this day March 21st, 1967 the 2nd Battalion 34th Armor earned it’s second Presidential Unit Citation for its efforts at the Battle of Suoi Tre. It remains one of the proudest days of my life watching those from the 77th Arty waving and cheering as we broke into the clearing of the firebase. This conflict lasted from March 19th to March 21st, 1967. and with the arrival of the Mech forces ended the 3 day battle 4 hours later . When it was nice and safe the brass hats and intelligence REMF’s arrived to confiscate the war souvenirs.
Don’t believe all that you hear from the History Channel and Military Channel. The NVA 9th Division commander says that Operation Junction City had no effect on his division , only the un-enlightened media can believe that a commander can loose most of a regiment and say that.
Gen Vessey’s spin ignores those who saved his butt for his climb to the Chief of Staff for the Army. We cannot forget the 31 Americans that were killed in this battle.

He and I trained at Ft Leonardwood Mo and went thru 90th replacement to 2nd 34th,,Neither of us had ever seen a damn armored tank untill we were helicoptered into the field in Jan 1967 to the unit--we trained on heavy equipment at leonardwood..The supply sergeant showed us the flak jacket of one of the tankers where an rpg went thru- one of the first casualties of 2nd 34th---arrived in the field and began our " on job training" to become tankers"--hello us army and vietnam

US Troops Losing Hearing
By CHELSEA J. CARTER Associated Press Writer The Associated Press
Dr. Michael Hoffer, a Navy captain and inner-ear specialists, left, checks the ears of U.S. Army Sgt. Ryan Kahlor, right, at Balboa Navy Medical Center in San Diego, Feb. 6, 2008. Kahlor's hearing was damaged by exposure to multiple IAD blasts in Iraq. Many soldiers and Marines returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering from noise-induced hearing loss, a condition audiological specialists now consider an "epidemic" within the military. (AP Photo/Denis Poroy)SAN DIEGO (AP) - Soldiers and Marines caught in roadside bombings and firefights in Iraq and Afghanistan are coming home in epidemic numbers with permanent hearing loss and ringing in their ears, prompting the military to redouble its efforts to protect the troops from noise.
Hearing damage is the No. 1 disability in the war on terror, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs, and some experts |

Comments: | Gary:
Well, Gary, today is that infamous date for me. Today is the date that Charlie 33 (C-33) was blown up from under me and as you know my Tank Commander Sgt. Hill and our Loader Vierra were erased from the face of the Earth. The Gunner Carson all I know is that he was burned SO bad that he was immediately evacuated to a burn hospital in Japan. Whether he lived or not, I never heard from him again. So I am one lucky son-of-a-gun! When the tank exploded and I was ejected (blown) out, got up, half-way came to my senses, I could see the NVA trying to hit me with their fire . The tank burning and the light from it was like a spot light shining on me. To this very day, I can still see the NVA tracers coming at me. Hundreds of them! It is just a miracle that NONE of the rounds hit me. I never found out what kind of machine guns they were using but all I know is that all I could see coming towards me was a wall of red projectiles
Any way, Gary, you understand |
