I was the driver of a 5ton that towed the Bn CO,s trailor
at Yakima Washington in 1965. While on the tank trail, the trailor
flipped over and I drug it for several miles unknown due to the dust. It
filled up with dust and ruined everything of the CO,s. They had to chase
me down with jeeps to get me to stop. I could see nothing following the
tanks. |

I really enjoyed the 2009 reunion. It was my first and I
regret not having attended before. Everyone made me feel welcome and I
am looking forward to hosting the 2011 reunion in Nasville. The contacts
are being made for the hotel accomodations and events. As they are
finalized , you will be given the details . It is my hope that we will
be able to get as many Dreadnaughts and family members to attend as
possible.I brought up the possibilty of overflow and the people I have
been talking to are open to that . They are also open to early arrival .
The cost proposals should be coming in shortly so we can make a decision
on the site and schedule as well as the dates for the reunion.God Bless
All of You and Your Families. Respectfully, Rick Welch |

I want to thank all the Dreadnaughts and their families
who donated so generously to Toby's memorial scholarship at the
Dreadnaught Reunion in Wheaton, Illinois. I presented the donation of
$710.00 to Dave Cox, director of Foundation and Alumni at Lake Land
Community College, Mattoon,Illinois on Wednesday, June 24. As I told
everyone at the reunion, Toby's scholarship is the only one through the
foudation that is geared to veterans families. Toby would be proud, but
humbled at the thought of being honored in this way. My family and I
felt this was the best way to honor and remember him. To those of you
who knew him you know why we felt this way. To those who didn't get the
chance to know him, I wish you could have and you also would know why he
was held in such high regard. Thanks again evryone. God Bless all of
you. Billie |

SSG Anselmo (Sam) Arismendez was one of my drill sergeants
at Ft. Knox, KY, the winter of 1970-71. He was tough but fair, and only
wanted to make us into competent, professional soldiers. In my military
career, I never forgot the example he set. I happen to be in Santa Fe,
and thought again of SSG Arismendez (he was from New Mexico). Out of
curiosity, I went on line to see if he might still be in the area. I
came upon your website and saw where he had passed away in 2003. Though
I know he will never see this, I wanted to go on record with my thanks
for his example to me and many other 'trainees'. Like I told you forty
years ago - "Yes, Drill Sergeant, some of us do remember".
Thank you, Drill Sergeant. |

A 60-year-old Vietnam War veteran who was killed by a
roadside bomb in Iraq has become the oldest Army soldier to die in that
conflict, the military said Thursday. An Associated Press database of
soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan shows that Maj. Steven
Hutchison, of Scottsdale, Ariz., is the oldest member of any service
branch killed since the wars broke out. The Pentagon said Steven
Hutchison was killed in Iraq on Sunday. Army spokesman Lt. Col. Nathan
Banks said Thursday that Hutchison was the oldest Army soldier killed in
Iraq. Hutchison was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment,
1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kan. |

What the 2nd day of May means to me. It is always a
sad day because on this day – May 2, 1970, the 2nd
Battalion 34th Armor lost 5 men to combat actions. On
that day the 34th Armor Battalion lost Sgt. David William
Barnett, Spec4 Rodney Lynn Griffin, SSG. Bunyan Durant Price, Major
Dale Wayne Richardson, and Captain Robert Milton Young. It was the
Battalion’s second highest causality date and I remember seeing
all of these men that on that day.
May 2, 1970 was also theday the 2/34th Armor Battalion lost Sgt. David
William Barnett - Tank Commander of B-23. He was killed while atop
his tank shortly before noon. His tank was leading a 4-vehicle
column consisting of his M48 tank, 1 M106 Mortar track, an AVLB
bridge tank from the 65th Engineers, and followed by 1 more M106 mortar
track. The total number of men in the column numbered just 17 men,
The mission was to get the AVLB, the tank, and the mortar tracks linked
up with mixed elements of 2/34th Armor and 2/47th Mech. Infantry
already in headed into Cambodia. "Barney's" crew consisted of Greg
Green, Tony Paolisso, and James Payne, with 2/34th HQ Mortars Plt.
Sgt. William E. Bercaw riding on top with "Barney", as the
column's only tank commander. The tank was also carrying a VN interpreter/scout
behind the bustle rack, who stood next to Tony Paolisso - who was
watching his TC’s back.
After leaving Prek Lok RVN and prior to joining the larger US
forces in Cambodia the little column of four vehicles was ambushed by a
vastly superior enemy force. Sgt. Barnett was hit and immediately
fell into the interior of the M48. Plt. Sgt. Bercaw was also wounded
at that time but stayed on top the tank and assisted Paolisso into
the tank. He then directed the tank's driver - James Payne - to
follow the trail forward towards the US forces far away in Cambodia.
We began running a "gauntlet" of RPGs, heavy machine guns,
and automatic weapons fire. The VN interpreter/scout had dismounted
the tank at the onset of the ambush, as there was no room for him in
the tank. He ran back to the following 2/34th mortar track. The
tanks crew began sending out round after round of canister as soon
as Paolisso joined Green at the cannon in the interior of the tank.
The next vehicle in line picked up the dismounted VN scout,
pausing only long enough to get the scout up the rear ladder steps
into the 3 door hatch of the mortar track. That mortar track crew
consisted of Raymond Zelazny (driver), Thomas Brighton (gunner),
myself (platoon medic), and Edward Athey (TC). Only two 65th
Engineers - a driver and gunner, who we really did not know, manned
the AVLB. The 2/34th mortar track bringing up the rear was manned by
Gary Griffin (driver), William Timmons, Anthony Tamburelli, Richard
Van Wagner, and Donald Sheldon.
Each vehicle in the column put out round after round alongside
both sides of the long and winding trail. The little column saved
itself only by reaching the perimeter of a larger US forces, as no
supportive artillery fire, gun ships, or other organic was sent
their way due to skirmishes occurring at the same time along the
larger forces perimeter. We were lucky to get there before running
out of canister rounds and rounds for our big 50 cal. machine guns and M16
rifles. When we reach the safety of the perimeter of the 2/34th
Armor and 2/47th Mech's position, I went to the B-23 tank to see to
about the condition of Sgt. Barnett and Plt. Sgt Bercaw. Bercaw was
visibly peppered with multiple wounds, but still upright and on the
rear deck of the tank. He sent me into the tank to check on
Barnett’s status, who I found on the floor of the tank’s
interior decking. It was very apparent that he had died immediately
at the start of the ambush. A 2/47th joined me at the
tank’s hatch asking if I need any help. I asked him to get a
stretcher for Sgt. Barnett and to let up out to see to Plt. Sgt.
Bercaw. Plt. Sgt. Bercaw had multiple wounds about the head , eyes,
face, chest and abdomen, and even his legs. He was bandaged and I
then checked the other members of the column for injuries. Except
for hearing loss from the tank gunners and drivers, no one else was
wound. All of the injured were evacuated shortly thereafter,
including the body of Sgt. David W. Smith of B Company, 2/47th
would was killed in an unrelated event earlier that morning. For Plt.
Sgt William E. Bercaw’s actions of leadership and fighting during
the running battle along the gauntlet’s jungle corridor he would
later receive the DSC, one of only three DSC awards made to members of the
34th Armor Battalion during the Vietnam War.
Later in the day of May 2, 1970 it would continue to be a bad day
for other men of the Battalion and for men of the 229th
Aviation Battalion. Men from the 2/34th Armor and the air crew of a
1st Cavalry UH1H helicopter, from B Company, 229th Aviation were
flying into the 2/34th Armor and 2/47th
Mech’s perimeter in Cambodia where the ambushed column lead by Plt.
Sgt. Bercaw had went to. After stopping that perimeter, I remember
seeing Rodney Griffin and the others moving about the helicopter.
After leaving our location, the helicopter was hit by fire from the
ground below and was forced to make an emergency landing. All
accounts I have found state that the chopper made it just inside the
Vietnam border. The flight crew of the 229th Aviation and
the 2/34th Armor men made it to ground from all accounts but only
one man from the helicopter made an effective escape. He was named
Sp4 Tommy Karreci, and he returned to US control in a couple of days
later after hiding and getting away from the crash site.
All of the 2.34th Armor Battalion men in the chopper
were never be seen alive again. They were listed as MIA or POW for
many years. According to the accounts I have researched, Cpt. Robert
M. Young was reported dying in captivity as a POW. Ssg. Bunyan D.
Price, Sp4 Rodney L. Griffin and Cpt. Dale W. Richardson of the 34th
Armor were never heard of again, as well as WO1 Michael Varnado of
the 229th.
Two men of the 229th Aviation Battalion were released
in 1973. They were Sp4 Fredrick H. Crowson and CW2 Daniel F.
Maslowski.
I hope you will honor all of the men lost that day, all the men
lost to us on all the other days of the Vietnam War, and to
celebrate the all memories (good and bad) we have of those men we
fought alongside with. The soldiers from a prior war had a saying
that I am only now becoming to learn and to understand. They said,
"Lest We Forget" back then, now I think I understand
what they meant.

Hi Pat! Hope this note finds you well. Just a note to

efforts with 2/34th newsletter and other unseen efforts have not
gone unnoticed, I for one am very proud of your service to our
country and your unselfish devotion to our unit, hats off to you. I
have scense retired from the USPS because of back surgery (360
degree spinal fusion, in 2000) OUCH!!!!!!!! My dr. said the
operation I had actually comes with a suicide % of 10%, well
needless to say I didn't do that, I mean after spending 1 year in
Nam with you guys and going on to work for the US gov. for 20 years,
the commies and the US gov.(USPS) couldn't kill me then I think I am
pretty safe, knock on wood. I have a friend who was with an inf.
unit (can't remember the unit, he'll probably kill me) and was shot
2 times (ak47) and him & I are pretty close. He comes over about

Keith William Nolan, the best author of Vietnam GI
stories died 19Feb09 in Webster Groves, MO at the age of 44. He
contacted me in April 1987 for information on 2/34th Armor leading
the Cambodian invasion May 1970. That provided the inspiration for
forming our Bn Assoc. 1000 reunited Dreadnaughts say Thanks, Keith!

I hope this finds all of you well.It seems as if the
country is in a bit of a mess right now. It has been through tough
times in the past and I am sure that the people of this country will
make it , in spite of everything. This thing has brought my family
and friends even closer together as we deal with the current
situation. I wish the best for all of you and your families.God be

Thanksgiving 1969, the Rock Crusher at Nui Ba Den. The
engineers were dismantling the place and had taken the roof off the
messhall. Our mess Sgt Lohnes served us a big turkey, shrimp
cocktail and all. The weather was gray but no rain. The place lacked
ambiance but boy that was a good meal 39 3/4 years ago. Long live
the Dreadnaughts! |
