34th Armor Regimental History

The 34th Armored Regiment was constituted on 28 August 1941. The Regiment consisted of 9 Battalions or Companies and a Regimental Headquarters & Headquarters Company or Battalion . It's makeup and composition was formulated on the Combat Arms Regimental system for Armor or Cavalry units that was in use in the Pre-WWII Army. Initially, it's for is similar to diagram below.

Each Battalion had it's own company structure similar to the ones shown in the diagram below.

After formation, the 34th Armored Regiment took the form as detailed below. Note: The Maintenance and Service companies were not designated in the general Regimental Systems Diagram, but they existed nonetheless, and they are portrayed to give purists less to argue about. Also, for the sake of argument, the Medical, Band, and other Support units are considered to be incorporated into either HQ & HQ

Over the years, many individuals (both in and out of the Army)  have attempted to determine the 34th Armored Regiment's history and lineage. Most of them have did an admirable job, but many have made some minor errors and some have made a few gross mistakes which have to some confusing conclusions. The Web Master presents the following chronological diagrams based on research obtained from actual official documents and papers which were provided to him. None of the following is "OFFICIAL", but I ask that you submit reliable documentation which will correct any misconceptions presented.

In between the orders above and one appearing below (dated 24 May 1957), several changes in unit "designations" occurred. The Web Master will attempt to detail those changes that occur to the original "34th Armor" units prior to the U.S. Army "Regimental History and Lineage" reconstruction efforts of 1957. Note: The following charts will only address the HQ & HQ BN, 1st BN, 2nd BN, 3rd BN, and 4th BN of the 34th ARMOR REGIMENT. The remainder of Regimental Battalion history for the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Battalion of the Regiment will be detailed further down this page.

NOTE: ALL OF THE ABOVE ARE 34TH ARMOR - EACH IS A HQ & HQ COMPANY OF THE 34TH ARMOR BATTALION, EXCEPT FOR COMPANY A, 306TH HVY TANKS - WHICH BECOMES A COMPANY UNDER HQ & HQ 34TH ARMOR (READ THAT AS THE REGIMENTAL HQ & HQ AND SERVICE COMPANY, OR 1ST BN, 34TH ARMOR. ALL HQ & HQ OF THE REGIMENTAL ARE 1ST BATTALIONS. NOW NOTE - COMPANY "B" - 306TH HVY TANKS IS RE-DESIGNATED AS HQ & HQ COMPANY 2ND BATTALION, 34TH MEDIUM TANK BATTALION, THAT IS THE PARENT BATTALION WITHIN OUR LINEAGE!

The Web Master must point out that this is "THE" juncture in the 34th Armor Regimental history where a lot of "historians" get confused.

More to come ................
